I've had a couple of sites penalised by Google.com recently and I thought I would not let these sites disappear in vain without letting other affiliates learn from my mistakes.

It's quite simple really, when you're building links to a new site, don't take any risks. For the first few weeks or so of link building make sure that you enough of your anchor texts contain your full URL (e.g. "http://www.mywebsite.com"), your domain name (e.g. MyWebsite.com) or "visit mywebsite.com".

If you link build like this for the first few weeks and months of your campaign then there's not that much that can go wrong. Google is not going to penalise you for having too many links with your full URL or domain since this is not over-optimisation.

The good thing about link building like this is because your site will build enough authority for you to start playing with anchors more and reduce the risk of getting penalised later on.

Do yourself a favour, open up http://www.opensiteexplorer.org and have a look at the anchor text distribution of large sites such as PokerListings.com. You'll see (natural or not) that a huge number of their links contain branded keywords "pokerlistings.com", "poker listing" or "pokerlistings".

Now compare this with your own site. Ask yourself "how natural does my site look in comparison to these"? If you have 25+% of your links contain an exact match anchor which isn't even your domain's name then that's a huge risk your taking.

Secondly, even if you have an exact match domain, don't think that you can get away with it too easily. I'm pretty sure Google is capable of distinguishing between exact match anchor texts on an exact match domain, and then brandable links. If you have the site PokerBubble.com for example than build plenty of links such as "PokerBubble Strategy" or "PokerBubble UB Review".

Google will recognise your site as a higher quality brand. This is in contast to owning the domain "PokerSite.org.uk" and building links such as "Poker Site", "Poker Sites" and "Best Poker Site". This is slightly unnatural considering Google will already know your domain isn't a brand and is simply playing off keyword optimisation. The searches were there way before you even started your site.

Anyway, I know 95% of affiliates on this forum already knew all this but I just wanted to say something to the newer affiliates. Even if your site isn't penalised right now, Google has plenty of information to analyse your site and change their algorithm in the future to punish you.

Don't take any risks with yourself. Build links naturally, give your website an easier time.

Hey PAL,

I've decided to start a new affiliate blog, UKPokerAffiliate.com.

Inspired by other blogs that I enjoy reading such as Kevin's etc, so I thought I'd start one myself and try to keep of all my silly ramblings and PL tirades outside the PAL forums. I hope you enjoy reading it and I do plan on writing down all of my monthly goals and thoughts.

Anyway, if you'd like to link exchange blogs or what not than PM me.

Have a good October everyone!

Also, figured I may as well let everyone know now that I'm going to china for 2 weeks in a week's time.

Thanks,

My apologies to Seb who I disagreed with like 2 weeks ago, but I've started to find google instant pretty annoying and just turned it off.

Well, first of all my internet is a bit slow so google coudln't even be arsed to work with me on that one and just told me that it wouldn't work. But even when it is working I find it annoying and doesn't really add any value to me.

If I can't find what I'm looking for on the 1st page then I'll assume it doesnt exist. I'm not playing around all day with the instant index waiting for something to crawl up.

So, google instant goes into my dustbin, replacing the old CAL Red button on the Pal screen.
