Confused by the title? Allow me to explain, it seems like too many people are becoming bloggers for the wrong reason now days. They think they are going to start an instant money maker and have multiple revenue streams on their personal blogs. If you're looking to make money with a blog, let me give you some advice. Don't start a blog like the one you are reading right here. In fact don't start ANY kind of personal blog.
Actually If your goal is to make quick money in the blogosphere, here's a tip. Start 40 ugly ass blogs with keyword rich domains all on different C-Class I.P. addresses. Then load them with keyword rich content. Hell, outsource all the content to India for $3 a post if you have to. Buy the best converting wordpress template for adsense, and run with it on all your blogs. If you really want, just do a unique header or change the colors on all your blogs if it makes you feel better.
Then spend all day link building and researching which blogs or individual posts are ranking for which keywords. You can then drill down the best way to monetize these individual posts that are ranking well. Next, leverage your network of blogs to drive even more SERPS by internal link building and inter-linking among similar content.
<-------------Token "stripper picture" since I mentioned the word prostitute 3 times in this post.
But starting a personal blog with hopes of making money is actually stupid. Sure, it works for a select few like John Chow. But for almost everyone else, it makes you look like a digital prostitute selling ad space, posts, reviews, and anything else that can make you a quick buck.
I'm not saying you shouldn't do this on every other blog.... just not on your personal blog.
People want to read personal blogs like Mark Cuban, Seth Godin, CalvinAyre, & Ron Jeremy because they want to hear opinions and thoughts. Trust me, nobody gives a shit about your paid review of some other site or widget. A prime example of a personal blog that I think has went a bit downhill is one of the more popular poker blogger entrepreneurs. **cough** T.C.
It's still a decent blog, and many of his posts are good. However every other time I go there it's a paid review, or some kind of advertisement in a post. Nobody going to an entrepreneurs blog to "follow their journey" wants to read this stuff. Nothing screams "I'm not a baller" louder than selling a post for $85.
I really didn't mean to single anyone out in this post. I just see a lot of people doing personal blogs lately. The point I am trying to get across is that making money on the internet is a hell of alot easier with websites. If you are going to have a personal blog, keep it personal, or talk about your niche or specialty.
Of course you should want to make money with your blog. BUT, making money should not be the main intent of a personal blog. When you make this your main objective, it becomes horrendously obvious to all your readers.
For the record I did make just shy of $30 on Adsense last month on this blog. And I sold one Sweat Sedo. Now, that my friends is how you ball with a personal blog.
Feel free to share your comments or tell me what a dumb ass I am for not trying to make heaps of money with a personal blog.
