My Prediction - Facebook Will Be Larger Than Myspace In 3 Years

Although I have been involved in internet marketing for several years now, I have to admit, when all these social networking sites started popping up, I wasn't that impressed, and to be honest most still don't impress me.

I think I was initially turned off to the idea because my only exposure to social networking was myspace.  Now keep in mind, I never had a personal myspace account, but I did have several hundreds of accounts for marketing purposes.  Myself and Kyle Healey also operated a myspace resource site that drove over 30,000 visitors per day looking for some of the dumbest shit I have ever heard of for their myspace pages.

In my opinion, giving 15 year old kids the ability to change the html of their pages, add music, and alter backgrounds was the dumbest thing in the world.  Plus, just the fact that I could run hundreds of friend adders, set up multiple fake accounts, and blatently spam comments meant that 1000's of other marketers were probably doing the same thing.  Oops, it looks like Kyle and I were part of the problem, not the solution!

We ended up getting out of the myspace business and selling our sites for a healthy 5 figure profit a little over a year ago.  I am 100% certain though, we jumped ship at just the absolute right time.

So having the paradigm that social networking sites are all filled with spam and awful graphics, I was somehow still talked into joining facebook.  I was pleasently surprised though that facebook is nothing like Myspace.  It's somewhat of a mix between linkedin and myspace.  Almost everyone I know has their business contacts as well as personal contacts on their facebook accounts.

Through facebook I have been able to keep up with relatives I have not seen in years as well as friends I graduated high school with over 14 years ago.... <----- (getting old)  A lot of these people I would never have correspondence with for the rest of my life if it weren't for facebook.

I'm still not sold on all the goofy applications and adolescent stuff like my buddy Brandon Berndt is.  But overall I do have to admit that facebook is pretty cool.  Unlike Myspace, throughout the last couple years Facebook has been able to develop a social network that is professional and allows people to keep up with their friends, family, and business contacts without having to send emails or pick up the phone.

Some may argue that this is less personable, but I would argue right back that it allows you to keep up with the people whom you would never call or email otherwise.

It is still a bit of shock and awe though when I see people like my mom, who can barely turn on a computer blowing my FB chat up.  In the coming years I think it will be very hard for any social network to compete with Facebook.  This is why I am making my prediction right now that in 3 years (October 16th, 2011) or before, Facebook will be exponentially larger than Myspace in terms of users.

I am accepting any wagers or prop bets on this as well, borrow if you have to!  With facebook now over 100 million users strong, they are starting to focus their efforts internationally and getting into translation.  They're next 100 million users should be right around the corner.

Feel free to share your thoughts on facebook versus myspace or if you agree with my prediction.

Facebook is for smart people and MySpace is for dumb people. That's pretty well-accepted, but then you have to factor in that there are way more dumb people than smart people. So that accounts for MySpace's growth. But then again, a lower % of dumb people have computers as opposed to the intelligent population. I'm not which factors will lead to overall greater growth but I'm not sure you should be so willing to bet against dumb people.

One issue with counting registrations is that like 93% of MySpace is spammers who end up getting banned. Are they counting those people in their signup stats?

Good points Nat. I think Myspace has 240M users right now, and I'm sure they are including EVERY account. I think facebook has finally gotten to the critical mass now where they are getting tons of word of mouth business.

Hell, that's the only reason most of my family joined. Now if Zuckerberg can can just figure out how to make it profitable, they will be set.

Can you guys imagine if Google bought facebook. That would be a sick acquisition.

What I find interesting is how lots of companies are starting to use facebook in their marketing material. Not sure how it is in the States, but here in Canada the cellphone providers like to use it to market their new cellphones. Some of their advertisements have been based completely around that, with phrases like "Upload pictures to your facebook in seconds." Really interesting to watch how it becomes such a big part of peoples lives.

The amount of applications that are on there though are just crazy, and I think if anything could be their downfall it could be that. I just see a lot of people get into facebook to begin with, but getting overwhelmed with everything.

I do agree that it will be bigger than Myspace by 2011, but by that time there could be an even bigger community based site out there Will be interesting to see.

I sooo agree with you Dan..its annoying as hell trying to clear some of the garbage out of my sidebar. Most people dont know how to limit what they send and just send it to everyone on their lists. Between the groups, invites and applications its a pain. On the other hand, if I knew someone who could make them, I would definatly be creating my own applications and use that angle for gaining traffic.

I don't even think it'll take that long, Facebook is so much better in my eyes, even for a young guy.

I like your prediction. I'd bet on Facebook all day long over Myspace being bigger in 3 years. Who uses Myspace anymore anyways? High school kids maybe.

You can't take away the fact that myspace has almost twice the members though. I still use myspace cause most of my friends are on it. I guess facebook is prettier but myspace still has way more people. i don"t think your prediction will come true.

Your right about not being the only marketer who spammed myspace for profit

Its possible Facebook might get bigger in terms of users. But I doubt they'll ever be more profitable.

    Reasons

    1. Myspace Music, Even though its a sub domain off Myspace . com they treat it like a separate business and it is estimated to be worth more that Myspace . com itself.

    2. Myspace has cleaned up spam significantly and a I think are moving in the right direction with their interface, etc.

    3. So far Myspace is in the Black Facebook is still in the red.

    4. Facebook hates paid advertisers myspace seems to love them. (I know this from experience)

    5. I understand Facebook wants to keep the quality of their advertisers high and weed out Crush tones etc.

They have vague advertising standards and have manual approval by interns it is very chaotic.

    Ex.
I submit my ads to the morning shift, "they get disapproved" I re-submit the same ads at night "they are approved!"

    * Facebook will be profitable when Zuckerberg leaves or actually starts running it like a business instead of his vision.

I think if facebook could do something similar to what myspace has done for artists and musicians they could close the gap much faster. Try googling your favorite band, chances are their myspace page ranks in the top 5 if not 1 or 2.

I couldnt agree with you more. I launched my "annoying" app (Coin Jars) on Facebook in January and intended to port it to Myspace etc but I have to say I have tended to spend resources on improving the FB app rather than the port - FB seem to be very strong.

Only thing that might count against them is some of the recent changes - making the feed and email more restrictive may reduce spam but will also inevitably reduce growth.

Who the hell still uses MySpace?!?!?... That died ages ago...Facebook is where it's at, at the moment and is gaining momentum. Even all the people that didn't want to join initially are doing so now.

Isn't facebook all ready bigger? My space might have more profiles because of the inflated number from spam bots, and because they never delete any, but almost all myspace profiles are teens.

Facebook has almost everyone with an internet connection on it.
