Finish College? Need Some Advice

Hey guys, some of you may remember a thread I made at PAL a couple years back asking for advice whether I should go to college or not (after dropping out of university after my first year). Everyone had really good advice for both sides of the "argument", and I decided to go back for business marketing.

I sit here in my second year of my program and am really debating dropping out and going 100% full time with my online business.

The program is only two years and I'm in my second year, but I will need to take a general ed class in the summer to get my diploma. Plus I have put myself in a tough spot by not attending class to pass everything this year.

I really don't learn much in class and have no interest of going... I study for the tests out of the textbook 2 hours before my tests (don't attend the lectures much) and get top marks in my class <- shitty thing is a lot of marks are given out in-class and tests are only a part of it all. I basically feel like I learn a ton more reading books and marketing blogs.

It might sound stupid that I only have 1 year of my entire life to finish school and I might not do it, but I am at a stage where I am confident I can "make it" working for myself online through online marketing, whether it be gambling affiliating or other stuff that I am currently getting into.

I don't work nearly enough hours in the week to get where I want to get, and I know I would be busting my ass if I was 100% out of school knowing this was my future.

I get really stressed out about school and I am not into it at all. I am a little worried about the way this industry is going, but I think if this industry disappeared completely tomorrow I would find a way to make a living online within a few weeks or months.

Anyways that is my huge rant and I just wanted a couple people to chime in and give a couple words of wisdom or advice. I want to make a decision ASAP so I can stop stressing so much. Thanks guys.

I would almost always say "you are young, go for it online" advising you to fall back if you fail.

In this case since you seem to be about more than halfway through it - I say finish up, doubt you will regret it.

Don't be stupid, college isn't anything more than a gut-check for people like us. You made a commitment to go to college so you should stick it out.

It's not about "making it" or "not making it", it's about setting a goal, following through, and completing it.

Definitely finish it up or you'll regret it later.

    Hey Kevin,

I'm in a similar situation to you (very similar actually). I'm finishing my degree (business marketing as well).

Anyway, I'm past halfway as well and I think it's worth it, even though you might never directly use it.

It's can be handy is you have an online marketing company or anything similar to say you have a degree in marketing on your about us page.

There is still a majority of people who think degrees = he knows what he's doing.

Anyway, kind of hypocritical for me because I've postponed my study while I'm traveling. It's such a grind when you hate it, don't attend class and see no benefit to it other than to have the piece of paper.

Regardless, I'm going to get my piece of paper. Plus it has already cost 20k+ so I should get something in return.

Sorry for the rant about me, but I think there are plenty of benefits to having it, that aren't so direct, that you can't even think of right now. Plus it's just one year.

Good luck with the decision mate,

    Nick

I think you should stick with it as well. You are over half way through and at this point having a degree is great as a backup plan.
You may never use it but you will always have it just in case and likely you have put a lot of money towards the degree. Might as well not leave the money on the table and get the piece of paper for it.

Im in the same situation man, Going to Georgian for business marketing in Barrie. and always say F school its boring. But Im sticking it in, also taking classes that I want to learn in, Talked to my administrator/ Dean and got into an advanced photoshop class, some web design classes ect.
I can already tell you I have learned more in those 3 classes and went to 90% of class so far because I want to learn to build my Sites and empire
I plan stick around another semester to learn about HTML 5.0 to put me over the top when it comes to webdesign/coding

Thanks for your responses guys. One thing that has been mentioned is college being a goal, but for me it really hasn't been a goal to get a college diploma. Also as far as money - tuition is only about $2000 a semester at the college so I won't worry about that.

I'm going over things in my head and jotting them down right now, hopefully that will help me out.

Get as many degrees as you can - just do it part time. That is my thoughts. I am still going to school years after completing university.

I would say do what you think is right, coming from a guy who was in the EXACT position as you with 1 year to go as well. If there is anyone who understands your scenario its me. If you want to talk more in depth feel free to skype me.

--Timing. Is school providing a better opportunity for you than what the current internet explosion would? Probably not.

As much as I wish I got my degree, it might just be me wanting to have it all and seeing the grass is greener on the other side.

Stick it out. Definitely worth it in the end irregrdless of whether you ever use it in your life.

Imagine you were 10 years older, thinking back. I'm almost sure that you would regret not having done the degree, plus you still can work on your business about 50%, so you don't lose a full year, only 6 months. And what are 6 months in a whole life?

I dropped out of university with one year left and travelled the world and worked full time. Most of my friends went into law or business school for more education and still don't have jobs. A college degree in biz marketing doesn't mean too much as it is.

Just because a person has a piece of paper that says they finished college doesn't mean they are smart and vice versa. If you aren't learning anything then why go? Unless you just want to finish just because.

I would say that the fact that some of the most successful people on this forum have either said they didn't finish/go or would not endorse going to college speaks volumes (Kyle, Jim, Roger, John and many others).

Also, I would be a ton more proud to be wildly successful without a degree than with one. Partially because I like the "fuck you" aspect of it and partially because I would feel like I accomplished so much more than all the clowns who went to school just because everyone else does.

Having a degree is hardly special, but real world results will always speak for themselves.

Also, anyone who needs a backup plan must not be too confident in their abilities to begin with. Considering the people using this as the reason, that would make sense.

Thanks for the input guys. Posting in the forum thread..

well if its just the last year i think you should finish your studies as you are doing now (multitasking) and u know you are doing really great so give it a go for this year and then a full swing online marketing with the college degree just as a back up... but anyways its your CALL that matters...
    Cheers dude great going....
