Randy's Rants - Don't Waste People's Time

Over the last two years I have learned a ton of things from other affiliates, friends, foe's. I've been lucky enough to make some great friends and network with some very smart people. I've always has the theory that I should "pay it forward" and so I've always made myself available to Q&A sessions with other affiliates. Here are a few things that totally piss me off!

1. If you are going to contact me and ask for advice, and if I spend a few hours of my time looking through my site, giving advice, and trying to help you out. Get off your ass and do some work afterwards. Don't try and figure out ways to make excuses for why your site is a total mess, just make a plan to fix it. If you were making money or NOT struggling, you would not be hitting me on IM 5 times a day.
The truth is, most people are looking for the golden egg, and when they find out it just takes REAL work, they keep searching for the egg and disregard valuable advice.

So, if you are going to IM me, or anyone else you damn well better be ready to listen and not waste our time.

2. Do not IM someone and then bail!! <<<< ----This is rude and disrespectful. I know we all have stuff come up, but do not make a habit of saying "Hey you around?" And the bail and not respond back. I bet that happens to me at least twice a day. I get an IM, stop what I'm doing and respond and don't hear anything back. If you do that more than once, I'm blocking you Sounds harsh, and if I know you well enough its different. But if you are a new affiliate or I don't know you, that's a quick way to get removed or blocked.

People time is valuable and you should not take it for granted or waste it. I hope new affiliates read this and take it to heart because networking is one of the most valuable tools you will have in this business. Don't screw it up by doing one of the things listed above.

I have been lucky enough to get advise from both Greg and Jeremy recently and have appreciated all of it.

Sometimes as a new affiliate its difficult becasue you don't want to bother someone especially when you know they are giving their time free.

Anyway I hope both Greg and Jeremy know that I appreciate the time they have spent with me.

Like you Randy, I love helping people out and giving suggestions about their sites. But nothing is worse than when people take up an hour of your time, you give some great tips and suggestions, and then they don't act upon them.

Over the years working with affiliates, I have realized one thing; too many new affiliates get into this business and think it is a get rich quick scheme.

Nice post Randy, and thanks for the kind words Doovde, your site is looking great.

LOL, maybe I should think twice before drunk blogging. The post came out about right though, I have gotten several IM's and PM's this morning wondering if I was speaking about anyone in particular, but really this is just a post about people in general. So please don't think I was talking about YOU.

Just make sure you are not that guy

I would like to mention that I've had plenty of help as well and appreciate it! There is nothing better as a new affililiate knowing that someone has taken the time to help you dodge some of the pitfalls. Great post Randy and Thanks everyone!

The best blogs are the drunk blogs! Well... sometimes. You bring up an excellent point. Sometimes I feel like one of those people you describe, except I'm not. I've been harassing a lot of people for help. Like... Graham, Cheryle, J-Man, Brandon, Sebastian, and others over the years. Picking brains, getting ideas, etc is something I value greatly. And I am actually "doing" things based on all that feedback, but sometimes I'm a little slow so it may look like I'm not doing much, but I do what I can.

Having made the transition from "noob who thinks throwing up banners on a website will get me rich" to "person who understands the importance of hard work and SEO to succeed", I try and help out those who are wearing my old shoes. That is the greatest thing this community enables: Get help, and give help back.

Now, can you unblock me please???? hehe! (That's a joke people)

I think we should all drunk blog at least once a month, for our health of course. Good scotch or a micro-brew really helps me get my blog on.

you need to blog about micro-brewing :-) always wanted ot get one of those kits.

Seriously though, after my post the amount of people IM'ing me went down dramatically

Again, I don't mind talking with anyone, I'm actually flattered when someone wants my advice, but hitting me up and asking my opinion and then trying to convince me I'm wrong, or just saying "well I'll try that on my next site" just pisses me off lol
