So - what are the first impressions of the World Cup after the first few days of group play?

1. Competitiveness
Nearly all of the games have been tight affairs. Defence first has been the mantra of most coaches - as they seek to avoid a negative first up result.

2. Enough with the Vuvuzela's
After four days of watching football being played in a din that sound like 1,000 hives of angry bees I am totally over this "traditional" supporters insturment.

buuzzzzzz ... buuzzzzzz ... bloody buuzzzzz

3. What about those Germans eh?
Sure - Australia is hardly a football powerhouse - but the manner with which the German side played was impressive. Pace, skill, enthusiam ... and four goals as well

4. The Jabulani ball - so what?
I have not seen anything so far of the excessive wobbles and movement that was supposed to happen with this light-weight ball at altitude.

Yes - I've seen some goalkeeping blunders (ahem Robert Green) ... but the ball did not appear to move at all. It was simply human error.

And we haven't seen any brilliant free-kicks yet.

------------

That's what I've made of the first few days. An intersting start - if not absolutely enthralling.

What have you made of the World Cup so far?

I completely agree about the horns. They are very annoying, but it's not going to go away. FIFA has said they're going to allow the Africans their right to blow them at the game. I hated it at first, but now I barely notice.

No solid free kicks because it seems the players are having trouble keeping the ball down. Not sure if that has something to do with the ball or just not striking well...
