My main goal this year is to be in a position to go full time as an affiliate come December.

I've been in the industry probably for around 18 months or so, but if I'm honest, I started to slack off my work towards the end of last year and got a bit lazy.

Anyway, things changed at the beginning of this year and I've started working towards this goal of going full time ... and touch wood, things are heading in the right direction.

To keep me motivated, and because some people might find it helpful to see what needs to be done before going full time, I've started an affiliate blog. You can find it at www.affiliatesunplugged.com.

You'll have to bear with me as I'm still trying to figure out how to use the Thesis theme, so things may well change, but there's a bit of content up there now and I'll try to keep it updated as often as possible.

See you over there :)

An introduction to XML feeds

I've been reading up a lot recently on how best to implement XML feeds into your websites, so I thought I'd write up a series of posts that would explain how I go about getting dynamic data being displayed in my content.

The series will be split over a number of blog posts and will cover:

Overview of the process and the structure of the XML feed

Setting up your database correctly

Extracing and downloading the relevant information using PHP

Displaying the relevant information on the screen

The reason behind this initial blog post is two fold.

Firstly, to guage interest levels - so if you think you'd find this series useful, just let me know and I'll plough on with it.

Secondly, I'm looking for a good XML feed to use in my example. C-Planet uses one, although the information in there is restricted purely to the current jackpot level. It might be useful to use an XML feed that stores more information (such as Game Name, Last Jackpot Won etc. etc.)

So if anyone knows of a good feed which can be accessed through a direct URL, then again just give me a shout below.

Cheers,

CAP London: My first conference

Having just come back from my first conference, I thought I'd post a few thoughts on here as I know there were a few questions posted on the forums about how useful they were.

Obviously, the conference has been overshadowed by various events but I wasn't there for that and so would rather focus on what everyone was really there for.

Given recent events at CAP, I know a lot of people from here were going to boycott the conference. From my point of view, I'm still new to this affiliate lark and seeing as the conference was right on my doorstep it seemed stupid not to go.

All in all, I had a great time. There were some really useful presentations on SEO and landing page optimisation which I was able to take learnings from and it was also good to put some faces to names as far as Account Managers go. What struck me most was how open everyone was despite the fact that I was still a relatively new affiliate on some of the programs.

Similarly the guys who were presenting were approachable and were quite prepared to have a chat through any questions that cropped up.

Also a big shout out to Graeme (Dealer Dan) and John (ThisisVegas) who were both awesome. It was great to put some faces to names and the two of them were brilliant by chatting through their experiences in the industry and introducing me to various other people at the conference.

For new affiliates like myself, I'd certainly suggest going to a conference if you get the opportunity. I don't know how much value there would be for a new affiliate in spending money to go to more than conference a year, but if one comes to town then I'd definitely recommend going along as it's a good source of information ... and it's always good to meet up with the people you spend so much time swapping ideas with on here!
