The Rakeback Debate

Been a while since I blogged about anything gaming industry related and about time I contributed my views to the ongoing debate on rakeback that seems to have captured the imagination of many in the affiliate world.

If you haven’t read the ‘offending’ article that sparked the saga, the views of Peter Marcus, William Hill Online’s COO, can be found here .

I’m going to stay clear of any discussion on whether, as a director of an operation recently offering rakeback, Marcus’ views are hypocritical, and focus on whether the facts he makes are accurate and can be substantiated.

What’s most interesting is the intensity that this debate has taken. There has always been significant opposition from a large number of operators towards rakeback affiliates and licensees. Some may argue, rightly so. For me, the key is whether such affiliates and licensees are providing additional value to the players through other channels. If they are, then fair play to them – they’re using the tools they have to make money, whilst still providing an educational service to the player.

Now, if you take a close look at one of the most successful rakeback sites, RakeTheRake.com, the main focus is undoubtedly on achieving the best rakeback offer available. It is also evident that the poker rooms offering bespoke rake races to this affiliate are lapping up his traffic. Does he offer another service to players beyond this? Well, I’ll leave you to decide that.

Back to the bigger picture – if you’ve read my previous posts, you’ll know that I disagree with the view that the affiliate’s role is simply to drive traffic, although Peter Marcus is 100% right to point to the need to avoid the cannibalisation of traffic. However, rakeback is not the prime proponent of this.

Operators need to look at the way they market their products. The bonus-led culture we work in has inspired rakeback, and is the main reason why companies are “stealing each other’s customers” as Marcus states. Rakeback is not the problem, backwards marketing strategies are. Poker rooms need to position themselves further apart and provide their players with something differentiable if they want to force the rakeback affiliate’s hand.

    As an operator that works with Karim and most others in the RB space. I would say that he and his team offer a service which is matched by few. This is probably why he gets to run promotions and has bigger races than others. As you well know, operators that get returns with affiliates run promotions and do more with them as a result.

    I think an element of his success was first mover advantage, but the main reason he is successful is the service that he offers his players. I get regular emails from him and his team with player queries, also Tony and Herb @ PAS do the same pretty well too and no doubt will become very successful as a result.

    Sadly not so many other Rakeback affiliates do this, and focus mainly on the "traffic driving part". Whilst he has some steady SEO positions, I imagine that he drives the vast majority of his business via Word of mouth from players he has personally helped over the years.


    So if someone were to ask me does RTR provide value over and above his affiliate commission, I would certainly say that they do more than most to encourage a player to keep raking and aid the player in every way they can to improve the experience of their players within the rooms they represent.

    Ca. 3 years ago when I were just a random poker player who raked something like 2.000$/month Karim called me on the phone when there were an issue with my account. After the issue were resolved he and took the time to make sure that I understood what was happening and why.

    I don't recall anybody else in the industry doing something like that for me... ever.

    Appreciate the comments guys. Kaus/Ian - in no way was I making an attack on Karim and RakeTheRake. Utmost respect for what he's done, and what he continues to do. There is certainly no jealousy there either - I'm not a poker affiliate. I did ask you to make your minds up as to whether he provides a service beyond rakeback - evidently for a number of people, he does.

    My reference was towards the content on the site, which is what the operators and networks will be looking at. I'll reaffirm what I've said - fair play to him. My attack is focused on the networks and the operators for the way they've marketed their products, not on the affiliate's who have benefited from their limited approach.
