The ‘What do you do for a living?’ Question

Since entering the Affiliate world and joining Tower Affiliates, I have been asked many times by friends, family and passers by, ‘And Tom, what do you do for a living?’ The response varies for each person depending on a variety of factors including: how well I know the person, how much time I have, and the degree of technical savvy the person has.

For example, my Father, a first generation Greek immigrant, does not know how to turn on a computer and doesn’t really care to learn. His knowledge of the internet includes – emailing, finding out the weather in Greece and access to porn – and this is just what he has heard about the internet – no first hand experience. One of the only things he does know is that I travel every couple of months to various parts of the world including London, Amsterdam and Budapest – just to name a few. As far as my Father is concerned, I could be involved in some sort of illegal activity. Needless to say, my Father asks few questions and knows very little about ‘what I do.’

When talking with my casual friends, my response to ‘what do you do?’ is typically, ‘Well, I work for a web-design company.’ Hey, it’s true! Most people can understand the concept of web-design and that it has something to do with the internet.

My closer friends and family, whom I speak to on a more regular basis and are aware of the online gaming industry, know more about ‘what I do.’ They know that my job is gaming related and I work with these people called ‘Affiliates’ and they help us promote Tower Gaming - easy enough to understand.

The truth is my job as Affiliate Manager with Tower Affiliates involves much more than traveling, working for a web-design company and just working with Affiliates to help us promote Tower. Just some of ‘What I do’ includes:

Account Manager (working with a wide variety of Affiliates including those just beginning and the more experienced – communicating daily through IM and Email)

Marketing Coordinator (brainstorming and implementing various marketing ideas including banners, mailers etc.)

Market Researcher (constantly searching forums and other sites to keep up-to-date on the latest news in the industry)

Confidant (believe it or not, I don’t just speak to my Affiliates about business - conversations include relationships, financial advise and other personal topics)

That is what makes working in the Affiliate industry so exciting. I get to put on a different ‘hat’ each day and no two days are the exact same. Each day, I get to talk to my group of Affiliates that are my clients but most importantly, I honestly consider many of them my friends. In not so many words, that is ‘what I do’ at Tower Affiliates.

Nice post Tom - my response generally tends to be "Online Advertising."

And when that gets a quizzical look: "It's all the banners you see as you go around the internet."

That usually leads to the question "You mean the pop-up windows?"

Nice blog Tom...I dont mind the questions so much as I do the "I really should get you to show me how to do that".
