Why Do You Love/Hate Facebook

Hey guys,

I am thinking of ideas for a new project and was wondering if people could give me some input on what they like and more importantly dislike about social sites like facebook, myspace, etc.

Anything helps at this point so just throw it out there for me please.

Well for starters........

I hate applications. I hate being poked. I hate random emails to join in some of the games. I hate having to opt out of stuff over and over again only to have to opt out again when facebook changes. I hate quizzes and I def hate the lack of security.

lol facebook is def not one of my fav sites. If it wasnt for family we don't see often and being able to see pics of nieces and nephews I probably wouldnt be using it anymore.

facebook groups from my experience once they get 50+ members just get spammed by random people selling stuff and asking to "join my group". You can adjust settings to prevent others posting on your wall - but then you lose the social interaction of your real members.

because of this i genuinely dislike joining any facebook group because it is just pointless and not worthwhile - even if it's a cool group at first you know it'll get ruined by spam.

Edit: on a positive note, a girl applying for the same internship as my flatmate had to start a fb group and get as many members as possible as part of the application. She had this really bright idea - secret london, and everyone posts their favroutie hidden gems about london.

Anyway, this bright idea proliferated rapidly on facebook and after about 2 weeks it had 40,000 members+ getting 1,000+ extra per day. She's since started an online website/business from the success of her fb group - secretcities.com.

Suffice to say an original/bright idea for a business can acheive more success through facebook social media via word of mouth than any serp success ever could! (btw did she get the internship? did she bollocks, think she quit to do her site backed by investors - good story folks!).

I love that my mom can use fb without having to do anything. We set it as her home page and all she has to do is open a browser to see what's new with everyone.

I also love the games, and that I can compete against my sisters, and everyone I know automatically, without having to do anything to invite them.

I don't love though that those games post junk all over the page where my mom's trying to see what's going on with us, find pictures n stuff like that. Way to confuse mom facebook!

I also like being able to advertise to people within 50 miles of a city, or based on something they like or a group they belong to, from an affiliate pov.

I like birthday reminders. I hate invites to anything electronic, but I love evites to birthday parties etc, I think fb oughta add a wish list with those events. When my nephew invites me to his party, a nice amazon link to his wish list would sure be handy.

I HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE the option on MySpace that allows users to 'hide' from people that don't know their email addresses. I realize it combats spam, but it's very frustrating.

Obviously love the pictures. Before facebook I pretty much thought you all were a bunch of old men. Turns out, most of you are anything but.

I also love finding people from school, distant family members etc. I pay for ancestry.com but have reconnected most of my husbands family via social networks.

It's irritating by the way that ancestry.com has a fb application but it doesn't pull from the tree you already made on ancestry.
