    Unhappy Dealing with writers block

    Hi,

I've just started out writing poker reviews and its all goin well but im just getting stuck and my mind is not all there. I really could use some good advice on dealing with writers block.

How do you deal with it and what does it take to overcome it?

I would be most grateful to hear some frendly advice from other members maybe even writers like myself.

Don't write when you don't want to, if at all possible. Setting a routine for writing in certain blocks of time - when you wake up, after you exercise, whatever - can help.

While it may seem obvious, making sure you've had a bit of food, water and so on can also make a big difference.

It can sometimes also help to do your research and outlining when you don't feel like writing. You'll still be productive and your review will be much easier to write when you do return to the right mood.

This, although if you are wanting to write full-time probably not practical. When I am in the mood to write it just flows off the keyboard, there is no thought that goes into what I am writing. It sounds ridiculous saying that but its true.

Expanding on what PTP said, it's just very important to make yourself feel good so you can find your inspiration. In addition to having a good meal, something as simple as a nice walk/run or change of scenery (maybe a coffee shop or a park) can really bring out inspiration in me. I've been on walks or drives in my car (listening to my favorite music) and couldn't get home fast enough as a good idea popped in my head. Those are great moments.

A lot of affiliates write their articles/reviews the same way, using the same exact format. I've found that this can quickly lead to writer's block.

If you're using a template, you might try visiting a blog such as Copyblogger or Problogger and using their titles. I've found that using titles different from "Poker Room Review" will kind of force you to write from a different perspective or angle.

For example (here are a couple titles I grabbed):

5 Secrets an 8-year old Natalie Wood Can Teach You About Persuasive Writing >> 5 Secrets I Can Teach/Show You About PokerStars -- A Hands On Review

7 Marketing Links You’d Be Crazy to Ignore >> 7 PartyPoker Qualities You'd Be Crazy to Ignore

How to Master the Craft of Writing >> How to Master the Software at Carbon Poker

Something like that, I guess. Obviously you'll want to over deliver with titles such as these. But hopefully you see what I'm getting at -- these titles nearly force you to write from a different angle, which can make writing a lot/often much easier, especially if you're writing the same types of stuff.

I've learned that if I am trying to write about poker and get writer's block I go play live poker. There always seems to be a good story or inspiration there. Sometimes a glass or two of wine helps too. Writing is not a 9-5 job. I have gone to the office in the middle of the night because I got inspiration.

Also, this time of the year sucks for productivity IMO. It is cold and the days are short. Not exactly inspiring.

Go for a walk, come back, bullet point what you want to write down and then put all the like bullet points together to set out your paragraphs.

But best advise, write when you want to and are in the mood.
