    Default Twitter Tips

I like the twitter if you can't tell. I don't endorse all the stuff on this page, I try to have an interesting twitter page that folks will enjoy, but there are a few things here I felt I should at least share.

I already said this in the other thread, but if you missed; you can post your blog updates to twitter automatically, so if you have a blog on a flagship site, there is no reason not to have a twitter account. It is free and easy traffic, if you are careful you can even keep it somewhat targeted.

You can follow 2K people (most of you know this I think). Once you reach 2K, the # of people that you can follow is determined as a function of how many people are following you. It is generally = the # of people following you + 10%. So if you have 3K followers, you can follow 3,300 people. Thus, maximizing the value of your followers can be useful.

Here are some guidelines you can use in building your twitter account. If someone has a poker pic or something poker related in their profile or account name, I automatically follow them (or refollow if they followed me first). If they tweet crap that annoys me later, I look at their twitter page to see if this person has any value to me.

Everyone else that follows me; I look at their page before I follow them back.

What do I look for when deciding who to follow? I look to see if they retweet other people's updates. If they do, then they have value to you no matter what their target market or niche may be.

If they are a poker player, then there is always the potential to monetize them later so I usually keep following them. I believe some 3rd party applications will automatically unfollow people who unfollow you, so unfollowing people can lose you followers (not many, but some).

If they are interesting, I consider this to be of value to me. Its not just about making money, I see some hilarious updates from some members here and some great ones from outside the industry as well and I love to follow these people. They will also give you cool things to retweet to your followers which is good for you in the end.

Who not to follow; People that don't retweet, never post anything interesting and only use twitter to promote their own business. Not much reason to follow these people, you are best off just unfollowing them, then go pick out followers from daniel negreanu's followers list. These followers will at least have some concentration of poker players.

Where to find lots of followers. These are untargeted followers and this is a practice that I think is a waste of time. However, I know tons of you use this type of strategy because I see you all the time on twitter... following 2000 people and only 90 followers. If you are looking to just spam folks, it seems common to just follow as many people as you can in hopes they will follow you back. In reality, you want to identify the other people using this strategy and use them to find your followers. Go through the list of people following them and pick people out ( or just follow them all). The people who are following a junk account like this are usually just refollowing everyone that follows them, so you will get a high % of people following you back in return if you select from this type of list. It will be a much higher rate than if you just go through random lists of people and start following.

Also as I mentioned, sometimes I'll raid the followers list of well known pros when im looking for poker players. The lesser known pro's can have an even higher concentration of poker players in their list just because they are not getting as many random followers as a result of other people's RTs. (The poker road crew is a good place to start with the exception of Joe Sebok)

If you must spam.... don't just leave 10 spammy updates in your profile. Have some interesting stuff and when you do update with a spam link, delete the previous links so your twitter page does not look like you are a complete spammer. You will have a better following and more success getting followers.

Im pretty sure twitter pages are crawled by most all of the search engines and I know they do hold pagerank. They are all nofollow links, but this doesnt mean your page cant show up in the SERPS with affiliate links attached.

Also, thanks to everyone from this forum who retweets my stuff for me. If you ever want something retweeted just ask me (DM, IM, PM or @ will work) because I follow too many people to see all of your updates all of the time

I should also add that if you want to see the good updates, you'll have to be quick. I delete about 50% of my updates within 20 seconds because I realize that they either implicated me in some sort of crime or were likely to offend more than half of my followers.

I'll have to disagree with you on that one Ozpoker as I've seen some real value in using Twitter from a marketing prospective. I know I have many times, clicked on links from Twitter to the topic they are mentioning. I may stay on that site for a while afterwards as well. I think if you use Twitter the correct way and don't SPAM and provide real value with your Tweets, it can be a great source of traffic and advertising.

I'm actually with Mark on this one. I thought the same thing until last week and used to completely waste my time and account with meaningless updates. Then last weekend I came across a pretty awesome article on macworld about 'quitters' and how some people just dont get it. Here is that article: Twitter Quitters

Also, keeping up with the conversations there is important. Once you get over 1k followers then it's impossible to manage all the things being said. Most of the people who follow my twitter are also affiliates there there are loads of links being tossed around. I use a free program called Tweetdeck to manage all the incoming messages and replys. I'd suggest it. I'm actually going to be doing a cool project with my account in a few weeks and I'll blog about it here.

Well, I'm not a Twitter guy but I can see some value.

I have two Felt Poker Forum guys that are playing in 2-3 WSOP events, they will be giving the forum twitter updated throughout. so, for things like this I see some value. Otherwise, I soooo sick of hearing everyone on TV, radio, etc saying "follow us on twitter". When something goes so main stream, it expedites the demise. Combine that with the huge amounts of marketing spam that is running on it and you have a mess.

I havent seen the appeal of tweetdeck. I just downloaded for the second time to try it out again and I dont think I will use it still. You cant view your followers so ill have to use the web anyway.
