Ask a simple question and all I get back is:
"Can I have a top spot?"
"So when will you move us to the top spot?"
"Ok, sounds great (never responding to original question), can we have your top position?"

I tend to reply with
"That may be possible, however, it will require a x,xxx$ slotting fee."

Goes both ways I'm sure, imagine all the affiliate managers hearing "can I get a freeroll" "can I get a higher rev share".

Well the slot fee is an offer, I'm just saying....
Affiliates have to earn their bread, and aff programs have to earn their position just the same.
I would make a joke out of this but it might not be funny to some.
Some affiliates I can get their top listings but not for all and I'd hope most AMs understand that they can't be #1 unless they have the best performance. My program does well for some affiliates but not all. For affiliates any top listings make great bartering tools.

Good point Randy. If someone ever asks for the top position either a) see if they they really are your best converting program per click b) immediately ask for an increased rev share. (or CPA if they convert under 5%)
For 6 years now I've never been one to sugar coat it, these are mostly guys who have clue what's it's like to run a portal. They don't know what it takes to add new content, build links, call people to an offer, choose the right programs etc.
Your traffic is worth money (and commissions to everyone involved). I'd be more interested in building partnerships than giving away the top spot on a cold call.
