Over the years I have dealt with many affiliate managers. Of course on that side of the industry, AM's move around and change companies. Fair enough, but I would like to publish an open letter to the operators who pay poker affiliate managers. In my opinion, they deserve a lot more recognition and compensation than they get. After talking to a few "top" AM's in the industry and finding out what they make, I was appalled to say the least.
Dear Operator,
Although you may see the affiliate program of your poker site as an expense on the P&L, it isn't. You are bringing in ridiculous amounts of traffic and players from affiliate's sites that you would never see otherwise (many untracked). Not to mention the branding you receive from being spread across the internet on various poker sites receiving xxx,xxx pageviews per day! Poker affiliate managers create this for you
The problem in our industry, at least on the affiliate side of this business, is having good quality affiliate managers that actually understand affiliates, and can work with us to increase conversions and make money as affiliates. They are few and far between. Half of the new AM's hired into this industry can't even explain what rake is or how to calculate it....... And you guys (operators) are paying these people to market to us!
There are a lot of good affiliate managers out there, and they (you guys know who you are) should be compensated for their hard work. Operators need to stop looking at the affiliate programs as an "expense" and see it as a "profit center".
If I could give one piece of advice to an operator, stop paying AM's garbage, and actually invest in a proven AM that will bring you affiliates, make you money, and provide great customer service...... There is a handful of them out there. A good affiliate manager should easily be making $100K a year......why? because they are making you $1M+ a year.
Bottom Line, if operators would invest in great affiliate managers who understand our industry, it would make our jobs so much easier, and the companies would make a lot more money. It's time for operators to open up their budgets to the affiliate programs and pay the top affiliate managers in the industry what they're worth. Every single one of the top A.M.'s have earned it, and THEY have the relationships with all of us "super affiliates", not the execs in the company.
So feel free to give a shout out to who you think a "Top Affiliate Manager" in the industry is. It's about time the good ones in our industry get recognized.
