These sites are usually all run by companies (not one or two webmasters). To really be successful you are going to need a TON of content. Two examples that come to mind here are CasinoCity and AskGamblers.com Both are massive, run by larger companies and buy a ton of content.
If you have a pretty decent poker site and want to add some other verticals I'd start with Casino and Sports. Bingo, Skill, Lotto just wont work that well (for smaller to medium sized sites).
Poker.com does a nice job of this with a very ordered, compelling call. Here is an example:

Big sites are good in lots of ways.

You can get links from a wider variety of sources. You can rank for more keyword phrases. You can work on a different section of the site when you get tired of writing about one topic.
Interesting points Randy
in my opinion big sites are good, but they require more links to get the kind of exposure you are wanting in the SERPs. Just slapping up a site with 1000 pages of content is not going to guarantee it will make money.
You've got to show google that those pages are important by getting enough link equity to the site.
First off, JohnH your new blog is awesome. I love the comment plug in as well. Killer.
I like Randy's take on how a cross-vertical site gives you more content options to write about. Also, it can be great for internal SEO and linking. Gives you a lot more options. Like John said though, without the quality SERPS it's just going to be a big mess. For these sites you've got to have a major plan and be good at time management and keeping consistent.
What are some of the best ways you guys have seen this work? I like the examples I mentioned above, but there are smaller sites that could be used as examples too.
