    Default News question

I think about adding a "news" category to one of my sites (not related to gambling at all).

However, if I would only copy-paste articles from newspapers (and giving them a backlink) I would only produce duplicate content. This might add some value to the visitors of my site (because they might have missed that news story), but this would not add any SEO value to my site. Therefore, I thought about writing abstracts of news stories and putting a link to the full article. But I am not very convinced about this approach...

So my question to you is: how do you webmasters with a "news" section on your site handle this topic?

hmm and that would be breaching their copyright - which is breaking the law - which if you were just habitually stealing their content they would likely get you (quite rightly) closed down

the backlink from their POV doesnt count for sh*t

IMHO its like someone stealing my bicycle from my shed and then "generiously" attaching a sign to it saying "this is scrawnybob's bike"

if the poker sites are sending you press releases then sure use them - thats what they're there for ... but ideally for you own sites benefit then re-write them

stealing other sites news verbatem is just plain lazy (and theft) - think about it they have invested the money to have a team of reporters / researchers etc - that is the reason why they are a newspaper and why they have the right in copyright law to protect their work (that counts for all creators of work / writing / art etc) ... its like my bike in my shed - its mine ;-)

Yes I agree with you - you are right of course. The idea came to me when searching google news. But they only use the first 30-50 words of an article and then link to the source.

So the question is more: How do you webmasters with a news section get content for that news section?

    Just paraphrase the news.

Once news is published it becomes public knowledge and is no longer copyright - just the actual article is...therefore, you can put a recap of the news - just don't include exclusive stuff like interviews, quotes, etc...from the article.

Even better, recap the news and add your opinion - then YOU get the credit because it becomes an editorial by YOU.

For example, you can recap what is going on with Tiger Woods after reading an article about it. Even better - read 2 or 3 articles and put them in your words. Facts are facts - you can't "steal" them.

    Good luck.

That's a great tip corpfan, thank you.

Summarizing three articles takes time - I then might think it could be a more effective way to spend my time on writing a completely new article. But I like the idea of adding a personal opinion - I think I will give it a try.

Btw, I searched around google news. There are a few news agencies (such as reuters, ap, ...) that write articles. Many newspaper copy them word-by-word, in particular for topics of minor interest.

Be careful if you are going to use content from newspapers and magazines. Some of them are extremely aggressive when they enforce their copyright, and don't necessarily ask you to take down the content before they send in their lawyers.

A couple of years ago one of my friends, who run a small business, ended up having to pay quite a healthy compensation for displaying a newspaper article about his company on his website.

Not that I think that there are anything wrong with them enforcing their rights, but it is worth to keep in mind, that they sometimes deal with copyright infringements in a very different way than most people are used to on the internet.

Adding this kind of content to your site, probably adds lots of value with various keywords that you might get hits from down the road. The more the better - but try and keep things concise and THINK about the words you use on each page - trying to use some more often than others.

I agree with Corp, put your own spin on the news, have fun with it, and give your readers a sense of your writing style and a reason to come back

How do you agree with Corp? I can never even read what he says! I just watch them go up n down n up n down n up n down till I eventually have to scroll away to break the mezmerization!

    - Great Advice in this window. You can try to go further with it as well. Like most of those hot playgirl type's that play 'pro poker' have agents and clammor at a shot at interviews... that could be fun news to write..

Then ask their agents to send you some high rez photo's to go with the news.. and it might even be fun news to read..

And as for the snatching of other pplz quotes.. You can call arnd n get your own too .

Arrests, murders, mayhem, those are all usually really good traffic stories, and the mugshots are public info if u can figure out which jail the guys went to.

You can write ANYTHING that's your opinion too, so like Ivey sluttin arnd with the girls in the casinos.. fun stuff just be sure it's your opinion, cuz if it's fact, ya better have some proof.. Use terms like I think, imo, etc.

Once you get a cpl news stories up, press releases just start landing in your inbox, the easiest news + images to come by is those.
