Manual Sitemaps in WP

I've created a manual sitemap and uploaded the .xml file to public_html.

My question, does this get auto updated or do i have to manually update it?

I'm not using the sitemap plugin - so just wondering if i have to do anything besides uploading the sitemap to root directory that one time.

As far as I know, you will have to update it manually if you do it manually. I would just use the plugin if I was you. Is there some reason you are doing it manually?

It's the only plugin I have left and don't want to use any. I was in the backend of another WP site that had super clean code and it wasn't using the plugin so assumed I didn't need it.

You really only need the sitemap if you're publishing a lot of PAGES as opposed to POSTS. But you can also link to the pages from posts if you're publishing posts.

Will be posting pages only. What is "a lot" of pages? If I'm just throwing up a 15-25 page site, would there be a problem getting indexed quickly without the plugin?

Would I be putting myself at risk?

Link to it from another site. Should only take a couple days to a week at best depending on the site it's linked from.

OR (if you want the sitemap)

You can buy the sitemap package for $20 and install it, then click the generator button when you want it to update the page, or set up a cron job and have it update daily/weekly/monthly

Isn't the plugin just essentially a cronjob?

I don't know what the plug-in does. It could take 15-20 pages a few weeks or a year to be indexed. It depends on how your internal navigation is set up. The more interlinked your pages are through followable links, the faster they should be indexed.
