Default Need some advise how to handle a job gone wrong.

I am posting this because i have an issue an want to be fair but at the same time not be taken advantage of.I got a quote last august on redoing a site i own plus some extra content. We agreed on price and i paid 50% and site was suppose to be done by October. Here is it April and site is not finished nor are all the tasks. The guy asked me to pay him the full balance even with site in this state.I am done with patience and cannot wait any longer to do it although he is attempting to do it.I want to hire somebody to finish the job and deduct the new fees to finish the job from the balance ,do you guys think that is fair? The work is really on a beginer level certainly not worth what i though i would be getting.I think my reputation speaks for itself and I do not want to be unfair to anyone but think you all agree 6 month delay is a bit much.Pls give me feedback on this ,what would you do?

    Hey Judy,

I actually help run a firm that deals with a lot of the programming and design side of a website as well as SEO and marketing. IMO you have given the guy a fair chance to get the work done. If I was in your position I would want a full refund on everything I have paid. If you feel that actually he has done more than 50% of the work and your happy to simply leave him with the money that could also work and would probably cause less hours of argueing. All web designers have to set targets and meet them, if they don't they should at least make sure the work isn't delayed too much. I'm not sure what sort of scale we are talking here but if I was waiting 6 months for work to be done I would want a full refund and go with somone else.

I would not wait any further for him to try to progress with the project.

I hope you manage to find a solution,

    - James

lol! Is this person on crack? If they want money, they should get the job done. Personally, 6 months behind schedule is not acceptable for a site redesign. It is in fact a clear sign of incompetence. Don't waste anymore time or money with this person. There's other qualified individuals who can do this work for you. Get what ever work was done, and fire his ass.

    Completely agree with the others.
Considering what you describe, you should certainly not pay another penny.

Asking for a refund on the advance payment should be done (if the job is really not completed at all by now) - but if its not a big sum of money, I would not pursue the refund too long. But asking makes sure this guy has less chances to make it look like you stole from him than vice versa. By requesting a refund, you stay in command (e.g. if he tries to damage your reputation publicly or even wants to take you to court).

I could only know if its a waste depending on the scale of the site design, number of pages etc. If its just the design shell and you were going to reapply all of the content to the design and make the pages yourself, then this designer is pure shit.

If the designer has 1000 pages to do then maybe I can see the problem, but they have to produce 50% of the work to satisfaction.

In my opinion, if the designer has low enough self respect to ask you for the full amount when he's six months behind, then he's unlikely to finish the work at all if you pay him the balance. If you think that he's done less than 50% of the work, i'd be discussing with him what amount he owes you. If you feel that he's done 50% or more of the work, then i'd tell him that he's fired and go elsewhere.

Deals like this are better to run, not walk, away from. If there is a six month delay on the first half, there will probably be a six month delay on the last half.

Be done with the deal. You need results, not ripoffs.

They did the content part which i paid in full , the template is done but coding , redirects etc not done at all.I decided with all your help ill let somebody finish the job and I will deduct that cost from the balance i agreed to.He told me he don't care if i pay him or not now but we all know what that means , next week he will say I didn't pay him for work lol.

From experience just walk away and hire someone else to complete it.
