Want to make some strategy vids....

.... so what's the best (free) application to do so.

I want to be able to record voiceover while playing obviously, and any features like subtitles would be nice, but not necessary.... with the view to upload to youtube and feed into blogs.

Any help choosing one is appreciated!

There may well be better options these days, but from my limited memory:

- CamStudio - Free Screen Recording Software to record.
- Welcome to virtualdub.org! - virtualdub.org for editing.
- MediaCoder - more than a universal audio/video transcoder - MediaCoder official website for converting.

That's if you want to go down the free route on a PC. Video recording, editing and converting for free is one of those tricky things that ends up taking more time and effort than you first thought it would. However, once you've got the process figured out you'll be fine. Just give it a few hours or a day or two to get to grips with it all.

FWIW I believe the weakest link out of those 3 is CamStudio, so if you decide to spend money on anything I'd look in to getting something like Camtasia, which should help to roll all of those 3 steps in to one anyway.

Go for Screenflow if you have a Mac.

I've used virtualdub in the past for optimising for web, so that will help. Will check out CamStudio and Camtasia

My pc freezes everytime I record more than about 2 seconds of play time.. any fix for that?

jingproject.com is pretty good, especially for free. camtasia is quality as well (not free).

You can try BB Flashback Express, totally free screen recorder with webcam recording features. Record yourself can be a great thing.

The annotations features of YouTube will be a big help if you want to add substitle.

Try to make your tutorials in Flash with DemoCreator so there will be some interactive objects which make the video more fun.
