Domain question

I have an Idea for a poker site. All keyword domains I'm after are obviously taken.

Apart from one which is : ****-*****.net

Should I invest in this and would it help rank for keyword even if has - and net??

Depends on how good you are at SEO, how competitive the keywords you are targeting are, and a billion other factors.

That domain won't hurt though. Can only help.

I'd rather xxx-yyyyworld or farm or ninja or goat or anything brandable. Don't think hypenathed domains have any major benefit over kw1kw2brandstyle word.

They have a significant benefit in that they'll be linked to with the keyword phase you're looking rank for. I heard suggestions in the past they were disadvantaged but I'm pretty sure this isn't the case.. I think personally they are no different than a 3-word domain with no dashes. The benefit comes in that you'll get more natural anchor text links.

The major downside is if you're looking to build a brand its not a good idea unless you're extremely confident you'll rank #1 for that term, because otherwise might lose visitors attempting to return. I've experienced first hand where this is the case because there is a site I visit often and type in: site name plus what i am looking for.. and the non - version outranks them every time (I know to look lower though and find them). They have no SEO focus at all and think they'd of been better calling themselves WaldoSports or something, because - does them no good.

Thanks for your help guys. I bought a familiar term domain poker****.net keyword gets fewer searches a month but it fits for my idea

Hey, Im not an SEO expert neither (yet) but from what I can tell having keywords in the domain is not THAT necessary.
My site ranks 13 for "poker room bonus" and has none of that words in the domain (wise-gambler.com).
still im pretty new and my site isnt even half finished :P i can see all of the competition for the given keyphrase HAS got at least POKER or BONUS in their domain name - if the ranking had to do much witrh the domain name i cant explain my ranking. i have only got few backlinks and everything is still in building phase... so better chose a name that brands well instead of pumping keywords in it.
