Depends on your budget and ability to do research.

Starting from scratch is a great way to gain experience and figure out what kind of websites work, what kind last over the long term and basically just learn all the little (and big) things that you would've never imagined had you not worked your way in.

If you have a large disposable income, I see nothing wrong with buying an established site. But this is like buying a business - it's risky and you better do a ton of research. You need to have a working knowledge of the industry, affiliate marketing and concrete ideas of what you can do to improve the site.

I started with buying an established site. This way you see money coming in from the start and that motivates (although its not the fruits of your own work). If you're new it can take pretty long before the money rolls in, which can be demotivating.
