Help a novice market to countries outside the USA

As the title says I would appreciate some advice on marketing to players outside the USA. I don't quite want to take on the challenge of translating yet, so just english speaking countries for now.

I don't really know where to start learning about this... even just a nudge in the right direction would be great.

Best place to start if you're American might be just registering a .ca domain and building that.

Say I own domain.com and I purchase domain.ca and redirect it to the .com would that help my rankings in google.ca?

Assuming you already have a site doing pretty well for US traffic, a good starting point would be to get more links from sites hosted in Canada (same with UK, Aus, etc).

I've done this before and it really doesn't help. You have to give google a better reason to think your site is targeted to a specific country.

In addition to Notspot's suggestion, I'd look at building out a ccTLD.

Must be mixed results, I know plenty who think it matters. Can't hurt either way.

You should also host in or near the region you're targeting.

Build a *.ca or *.uk domain tld website. And host respectively in Canada or UK.

However you'll still get some US traffic, so think of geo-targeting.

so it seems buy a .ca, .uk, etc domain, host in targeted country, geotarget in google webmaster, and get links from the targeted countries. Thanks for the advice.

Also use country specific promos or talk about the local scene. In Britain for instance use Liv Boeree to promote pokerstars, in Australia use Joe Hachem...
