Default How long will domains hold value for?

10 years from now are premium domains worth a lot?
Example Slots.com just sold for 5.5 million.
Will there ever be a time that this domain is not worth $5K?

Right now a given domain (same name, different extension) is valued in this order:

    #1 .com
    #2 .net
    #3 .org
#4 international extensions: .co.uk, .de, .ca, etc.
#5 everything else. .cc, .info (small country + other stuff), .name, .pro etc.

If you don't agree with that order discuss. If you do agree discuss how this might change in future. Might there be 50 different tlds or 1000 different etc, that all have equal perceived value. Where on the list where they fall? In time does .com get devalue, do all extensions get devalued, do just .net and .org get devalued, etc. etc.

    10 years, 20 years, 50 years etc?

What's the future of domain names. Very curious to hear others opinions.
If you're going to bet US Sports online - I strongly suggest 5Dimes.com or Bookmaker.eu.

The internet is not going away anytime soon.
I see owning a quality domain like owning real estate, it will only go up in value with time. Every day another good 1000 or so domains get registered while very few quality domains get dropped.

the internet is not going away for sure. But it seems inevitable at some point use of other tlds has to become common doesn't it?

Do .net and .org hold value long term, or only .com? Say 50 years from now you think .com, .net, .org in that order still?

I say .com will always be first

Then .net and .org although I like .net for gambling because of all the poker and caisnos advertising they're .net site on tv I think that makes .nets more accepted among gamblers.

Then you have the main country extensions which I think will gain in popularty over the next few years. I would spend a fair chunk of change to get a really good premium .ca to develop as my main site instead of just a good premium .com

i venture to guess that in the long term .coms will hold value as many pud sites (no brandability or stickyness) that run via .net and .org will ultimately loose visibility in search engines. I could see some extensions rising up such as .me. There are many .mes beginning to compete and outrank .coms in several niches for very competitive keywords. The benefit of .me is that it is a tld that does have potential for specific personal use or stickyness factor. Although the .me is largely limited to personal type sites that are blogs or interactive sites. e.g. bobparsons.me or flavors.me or cssstyle.me or theshit.me

Obviously a business will never make a .me their flagship domain for their site just like any other non .com. .COM is definitely the flagship extension for business, but there is always room for another extension with stickyness factor purely for informational / community / blog type sites.

I think it will matter less and less what the extension or even the url is, and the content will matter more and more. I think it can be compared to telephone numbers... in the past it was nice to have a simple easy to remember number, but now that devices are so sophisticated, people don't have to remember any numbers, and they wouldn't notice if you had a really nice one. They might notice and say "whoa" but that's all.

I think same will happen to some extent with domain names as browsers, search engines, communication software and anti virus programs get better and friendlier to use.

Indeed, .com will always be the first. However, I like .org domains more than .net. Especially after the sale of Poker.org, premium domains with .org will generate great interest. Just my 2 cents.

Increase in value? Most probably not unless they come out with a different extension as we progress in time. To me we are still in infancy stage as far as internet is concern.

Just take a look at the changing patterns we had over the past 18 years. Probably 10-15 years from now what we'll have are just simple URL ads.
