Default Amazon.com Cutting Off Affiliates in Colorado

This post is NOT gambling-related, but these decisions by Amazon.com could have far-reaching effects for online marketers. What the regulators are failing to see, is that reduced revenue for affiliates, will mean less tax revenue for the state. Obviously, this was not thought out well. Rhode Island and North Carolina have also been shut-off by Amazon.com in recent months.

Yeah, those states just followed behind New York. I don't think law makers ever really think things through before making a choice.

This is just stupid. I don't know if you saw this as well, but now it sounds like paypal is going to have to start issuing 1099 tax forms (link) to everyone as well.

In all seriousness, between all the new taxes, regulations, and uncertainty, there is barely any incentive to be a small business owner in America anymore.

You might want to change the title of this post since it makes it seem like they are cutting all affiliates, not just ones in a specific state (big difference)

I saw this as well and remember seeing this happen in New York not too long ago. I think this will set the precedent for other states to do this as well. Not only that, but it may well set future precedents for increased taxing on the Internet. We should definitely be on the lookout for more activity like this.

I mean this sounds bad and everything and it sucks but if you are a big-time Amazon affiliate this will take you about forty five minutes to get around. Those guys aren't just going to stop working for Amazon - they'll just get a PO Box in another state or use a friend/relatives address etc. It isn't even like they have to leave the US, just over state lines. Not a big deal.

If you aren't making enough as an Amazon affiliate to make that worth your time then this isn't that big of a deal for you anyway.

I don't know the states' motives for this but I doubt it is targeted at affiliates. I still don't think the government has a grasp on what an affiliate is yet.

That's the problem with libs. They think something is wrong and that "someone ought to do something about that" and pass some half-assed law. Next thing you know, everyone is suffering from a ton of unintended consequences. Pretty soon they'll try to increase everyone's life expectancy by outlawing death.

I feel like I'm watching a bunch of monkeys throw feces at each other. It would be funny if we weren't caught in the middle of it.
