7 card stud hi-lo strategy
When playing 7CS hi/lo the main thing to remember is: there is always a high hand. Not always a low hand. This is important as chasing a low hand when you start for instance with A-2-3 it starts off good, but if the next cards are a 9 and a J there are only two more cards left to come and they both need to be lower then 8 and not pair your cards to have a chance of taking low. Vital is that you try to get involved when you have a chance of picking up both or 75% of the pot. This can for instance be 3-4-5 as a starting hand or A-3-6 with the Ace being suited. These marginally bigger and better playable hands give you a few %% more chance of taking either both the pots or splitting one whilst taking the other.
If you manage to hit either Nuts then the risk to take is to bet hard at the pot. This could be to either take both pots there and then or to get 50% of some other players chip if you get 75% of the pot.
common mistakes in 7 card stud
A lot of players tend to not look at other players hands. They decide what is a good hand judged on the cards in their hands. This is easily illustrated by the following example of a bad 7 Card Stud hand. You hold 3-3-6-6-A on fifth street. An opponents is showing 8-8-2 and has been betting the whole time. This is an excellent time to fold as either an 8 or a pair in the hole or a matched 3 is already enough to beat you as the high pair shown is higher then your pair A lot of players think that their hand is good and bet with that. A good look at other players cards can stop this from happening and don’t ever get annoyed if time is called on you. A lot of players will, definitely in live games, but also on the internet, call for time and put pressure on a player that is thinking about making a decision. If you really have a decision to make then take it when your calculations are ready and not because players ask you to make them.
common mistakes in 7 card stud hi-lo
Some players get confused about the real low hand in 7 Card Stud. The fact that the HIGHEST card in the low hand determines the low hand confuses a lot of players. The fact that A-2-3-4-7 gets beaten by A-3-4-5-6 is for a lot of people hard to understand as A-2-3- is in their mind lower then A-3-4. You are able to take advantage of this if you think you are located at a table with a novice.
Other mistakes made by players is calling with a low hand for a split. Even if you have a low hand that looks good it can still be matched or even beaten by someone else. As you know you will not take the high pot you might be calling for 25% of the chips.
Furthermore, a lot of players go for pots half hearted. Hands like 3-4-5-6- are played very aggressive while it is still not good for either high or low. And even if you make the straight you might loose to a higher straight or better and low will probably be beaten too, so hand selection here is very important
