To be honest the old one really sucked. This is a huge improvement, good job.
I would make a small change though, and use the spade in the "o" inīpoker instead of "a".

But the spade is typically used to represent the letter A in logos (i.e. Cardplayers, etc)?

if I had to hire an artist to work from a sample, I would use the original as a sample. I like how the lettering sort of looked like it was wrapped around the globe, although it was little sloppy. I suppose my other criticism is that the lettering above the logo on the new design isn't really incorporated into the design much, maybe just a font change could change this appearance.

You have a great concept for this logo. A design contest might be the way to go because there is some cool stuff you could do to work around the globe.

I plan to have professionals do a final version of the logo. I just enjoy playing with designs myself over time. I'd like to try and incorporate some country flags into the design as well. But I'll leave that to the graphic pros.

Hmmm......probably because of the design on that particular spade graphic, the body being so large compared with the stem, and having to shrink the graphic down to avatar size.

I think the new logo has more of that Hard Rock Cafe look to it, more "hip" and current I guess?
