There are a lot of 'lightweight' users that just need this basic functionality. I have a desktop and very rarely will do something that doesn't require a browser...
Exactly, and I think a tablet or laptop will always be sufficient, if not superior for those purposes. I think Chromebook attempts to solve a problem people aren't really having. That's our disagreement.

Guess we'll see, but sales to date don't seem to suggest a real interest.

As others eluded to, one very good use for chromebooks would be organizations that use google apps could deploy them to people in the field at a relatively low cost. There isn't any information to hijack or compromise as all the information is stored in the cloud: emails, docs, spreadsheets, etc

If a chromebook is stolen or an employee is terminated you simply shutoff their access in google apps. No info loss.

I actually think this setup would work really well given the right set of circumstances and users.

Interestingly enough, Sun workstations worked this way more or less ~10-15 years ago. I don't think the price was nearly as competitive tho.

The AU release date was meant to be late 2011 but I've heard nothing. I am thinking it will be sold at stores like Harvey Norman and Dick Smith but who knows.

uh yeh sun workstations were ridiculously expensive back in the day, but that was essentially their own flavor of unix.
