These might catch on for schools or other orgs, but I can't see it happening for personal use except in poorer countries.
The tablet is going to take over whatever space the netbook did occupy / would have occupied. I think it's more a tactic designed to force Microsoft to go on the defensive with corp / org customers than anything else.
You can do a heck of a lot more on a Chromebook then what you can do on a tablet, they serve two completely different markets. I think the problem with the Chromebook is that since google isn't manufacturing it themselves, the manufacturers will make sure its not priced too low so as not to impact their own laptop sales. Because I think to be competitive, for the functionality the Chromebook has, it still has to drop down in price a little bit. When you think about it, essentially it's just a browser, but even still I can still see a lot of people being interested in getting one (students/small business owners etc). Sill waiting for it in Australia though.
You can do a lot more on a netbook than a tablet, but at the point when I want to do more, I'll just use my laptop and so will most others (I assume, anyhow).
Like I said, I can see it in organizations (although, again, tablets are going to be a better choice for many business and students) because of how simple / low cost it is (i think G gives schools affordable rental / lease plans), but I believe the netbook is going to ultimately get squeezed between the tablet and the ever-cheaper, more versatile laptop.
I don't think Google is interested in getting in to the device market so much as they're interested in illustrating a proof of concept that a browser can essentially be an o/s and that data and applications can live unteathered from a hard drive successfully in mainstream computing.
I haven't read up on chromebook, but honestly, google already has enough of my information. I'm happy with other OS's.
That's where I disgree. If I want to do more, I will use my desktop, for everything else I would use the Chromebook. It has a fast boot time (8-10 secs), doesn't require software/upgrades, apparently its much quicker then your typical netbook, what more could you ask for.
Photoshop? Dreamweaver? Etc.
The google app store isn't that impressive, it's mostly just webpages.
Maybe we differ because I don't use a desktop; my laptop is my primary computer. If I used a desktop as my primary computer a netbook might be appealing, I guess.
Have you used a tablet for work at all?
No photoshop on iPad, but then again I use iPad for different reasons to laptop. If I didn't have iPad then for sure would get chrome book

Mate you are completely missing the point. The chromebook isn't trying to be a laptop. It's not designed for advanced users, if you want to use photoshop/dreamweaver, video editing, etc then its not for you. But if you want to do simple stuff like web browsing, email, watch videos, play games online, social networking, maybe use a text editor/spreadsheet etc its a perfect solution. There are a lot of 'lightweight' users that just need this basic functionality. I have a desktop and very rarely will do something that doesn't require a browser...
some programmers use it who only want access to internet and coding via ssh.
