    Default I don't understand twitter

So I had never even been to the website till tonight, but now seeing big companies marketing their twitter stuff I figured I'd check it out. I signed up tonight and am looking at it thinking ... umm wtf is this.

It looks to be just an annoying like message board all grouped together. Is it something else that I am missing.

Twitter fans sell me, or show me an example of something useful here please.
    Thanks.
If you're going to bet US Sports online - I strongly suggest 5Dimes.com or Bookmaker.eu.

    Default +1

    hi

    lol make that a +1

I'm sure there is some sort of angle if you have a sort of following - thats pretty much all I can work out from it - if you have a buzz or your site is a buzzy sort of a site

then (I think) you post up cr*p in the same way that people in offices seem to have too much on their time posting in facebook "I'm just going for a cr*p and I had a mars bar for breakfast"

I think they use it for posting "interesting" sippets like things you might have going on at your site - like a tournament

but afaiks its like shouting from the mountains - if nobody is in ear shot then you may as well be shouting from them moon

IMHO if you have forum that already by definition could know whats going on far easier - then who are you really going to get ?

I know dig and things can be used (if you know what your doing) to get some good links and traffic etc (there was a social bookmarking post by one of the members in the blog thing) - which looked really clever if I could understand it

but IMHO twitter is probably for twits with too much time on their hands

    cheers scrawnybob

I have an account because Chris Moyles (a UK radio DJ) was talking about it so i checked it out.. I have to admit I am completely clueless as to how it works and what it does but would love to hear from twitter fans aswell to see what they come up with

Twitter is basically a mini blog tool where you post something that is 140 characters or less. This is called a Tweet. You have a Twitter account like Twitter / pokerprop

People can sign up to "follow" your account.

When you make an update to your twitter account, the people following you will get a "tweet" (your post) delivered to their account. They can read what you posted. You can post whatever you want if it's under 140 characters, links to webpages included.

You can also follow other twitter accounts and get updated when they Tweet.

    ---

An example of where a poker affiliate could use this:

Say you have a forum and you create a new twitter account and you get 500 of your forum users to follow your twitter account. Say you setup regular private tournaments for your forum members.

Let's say your next private tournament is at 7pm tonight. You can "tweet" to remind your followers that there is a tournament at 7pm tonight at say 6pm. Your followers will get that information instantly.

The reason this may be better than say email is that Twitter can be easily synced up to a mobile phone, so if one of your players was eating dinner but got your Tweet, they may hurry to the computer to register to play.

There are plenty of other uses, but that's just one example.

Posted this in another thread but there is a free webinar on the 31st on using Twitter for business - Here is teh link https://event.on24.com/eventRegistra...epage=register

I find there are a bunch of different ways to use Twitter - Even if you don't use it for promoting your business then use it to follow good SEO/marketing people - I posted a list of good people a while ago on CAP which you can see here - I now have a lot more on my list but too tired/hungover to write them right now xxxxhttp://www.casinoaffiliateprograms.com/bb/useful-people-to-follow-on-twitter.33042.html?&highlight=twitter

Maybe we could start a thread of good people to follow on Twitter?

I get the general idea but still don't see its value for neither the follower nor the twitterer.
Even if you fall on your face, you're still moving forward.

I can see the advantages in that you can reach a large audience and get your site out to as much people as you can. But frankly on a personal level I do not get Twitter at all. On a side note, maybe someone who twitters will read this twitter it to friends and ends ultimately at the one of the executives. This one thinks there should be a nice little book called : " Twitter for Dummies" . Then we really have hit rock bottom. :P hhaha

I think it's hard to see its value if you are looking at it from a business perspective, although I'm sure that some people can utilize it effectively (like with Mark's example).

But if you think of it for personal use, you might find it interesting to know what someone is up to every now and then. Yoy might think "meh" but it's kinda interesting, and its totally free information on your doorstep.

Similarly, a lot of people enjoy letting others know their opinions on stuff or what they're up to, and that's why I think it has taken off so much. For example, anyone that has facebook will know that loads of their contacts constantly update their status to let everyone know what they think or what they're doing. I always find them interesting to read every now and then.

Twitter isn't actually for me really, and I'm sure it's not for everyone. I can definitely see why it has taken off so much though, it's just fun and interesting.
