This is a couple months old but Yahoo announced that they will be getting rid of Geocities (link) later this year. Don't ask me why but I'm kind of sad to see it go. I used to have a few myself back in the day.

Wow, it was waaaay back when I used them too.
I thought they started to charge - so to 'heck' with that.
But it is too bad, why doesn't someone just buy it from them?

It's probably not making enough money off the advertising to make it worth anyone's while to buy the domain/service.
There are many orphaned accounts on GeoCities. The content will never be updated, I am sure.
If there are sites you enjoy on GeoCities, you can try to bookmark their pages on archive.org (the Wayback Machine). However, if Yahoo! blocks crawling of that domain with robots.txt all the pages will vanish from archive.org, too.

My first site was up on Geocites too - a fan page for the film Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

I don't think Lycos is changing its hosting services. Due to some sell-offs and acquisitions a few years ago the Lycos brand became divided between two companies. Lycos Europe just went into bankruptcy a month or so ago. Lycos USA, which runs the hosting service, just announced it is buying back the rights to use the Lycos brand and trademarks in Europe and will be expanding its (meta) search services into Europe (again).
