Default My Brother Is Fluent In Chinese

My brother has just got back from China and is at home for 2 or 3 months. He's in the middle of a Chinese Uni course and has lived out in China for over 2 years. As far as I'm aware he can speak and write Chinese fluently (I'm in no position to verify this though ha ha).

Anyways, my thoughts are that there must be some way for him to make money online as an English to Chinese or Chinese to English translator. Chinese translations have no value in Poker and Gambling, but does anyone have any ideas of where he could look for work online?

He's pretty convinced that unless he's working for a big company or something he isn't going to be able to make money. I'm sure he can make some money freelancing somewhere and would love to prove him wrong.

So aside from throwing up a post on digital point, how could he go about finding some freelance work and earn some money over the summer? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

No offense but "as far as I'm aware" attesting to his language skills doesn't mean a whole lot unless you are fluent in Chinese and can judge his language skills. Also, 2 years in country doesn't make someone fluent and able to understand all the nuances of the language.

That is exactly how you end up with all those Engrish translations in Chinese made goods. Someone who sort of speaks English writing the translations.

I mean, I know guys who speak Italian and French who have lived in Spain who speak the language fairly fluently because the languages are so similar but they would never offer themselves out as a translator.

There are loads of sites for freelance translators.

Toward the end of my corporate days a large percentage of VP level + guys were being relocated to China... all part of the longer term strategy for this market. Sure there is now a recession etc but the big corps still have their eyes on China as a future driver of growth... I'd say forget the translations and target an internship with a blue-chip instead, could be a through ticket to a great job after his degree!

    Just my 2p!
