Haha it is funny what everyone believes that Thanksgiving is, but actually, Thanksgiving was made a national holiday in October of 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln.
The founder of Thanksgiving is a woman by the name of Sarah Josepha Hale. The thinking behind Thanksgiving was that the United States were going through a lot of problems and in the years leading up to the Civil war, she thought that perhaps a day to give thanks and to celebrate would be a way to help heal some of the wounds.
Sarah fought for many years to make Thanksgiving a national holiday and wrote to countless presidents and other governement officials before finally having her wish granted in October of 1863.
Beyond founding Thanksgiving (although it has much strayed from it's original intentions), Sarah was a single mother of 5 children in the 1800's! Her husband died and instead of depending on family and friends as many did in those times, she became a seastress and supported her family on her own. She is also responsible for one of the first daycares for children of working mothers and did lots of work towards establishing public parks throughout the country.
As a business woman myself, I give much to kudos to Mrs. Hale who set not only a great example for her 5 children, but also for the rest of the world.
Here is a link about her in the Silicon Valley Mercury News
Just thought I would give a little background on the Holiday. It is not a religious holiday, but instead one to give thanks for everything you have like friends, family, career...whatever you have to be thankful for.
