Default So Long Doc...Phillies land Halladay!!

Sources: Roy Halladay to Philadelphia Phillies, Cliff Lee to Seattle Mariners deal close - ESPN

Well being a life long Jays fan, this is both a sad and exciting day.

I remember way back when the Jays traded their best player for Roberto Alomar and Joe Carter and that lead to back to back world series. Roberto ALomar is also about to become the Jays first Hall of Famer so here is hoping this trade has the same long term effects.

    Good Luck in Philli Doc!!!

From a Philly perspective I'm not sure I like the move. Cliff Lee absolutely dominated for them and dominated the NL. I know Halladay is a stud as well - but I would have had a tough time parting with Lee. Regardless, I like the hot stove action. Just need the Redbirds to man up and sign Holliday and Pujols all in one punch

I agree that Lee is amazing. I dont see any reason for them to be trading away Lee after giving up a lot of prospects for him last year.

They should keep him for the rest of year and have the best 1,2,3, in recent history.

But of course we really have no idea what the trade actually is maybe Lee is not going anywhere. Personally now I will rooting for Philli so I hope he is not part of the trade.

It would be great watching Roy pitching a complete game to win the world series even if its not with Jays

Do you think that this makes up for taking the 92 world series LOL

Baseball needs a salary cap badly ... watch all the big teams dominate the next few years with huge payrolls while teams like Toronto struggle because of financial reasons...

There is a salary cap, but teams like the Yankees don't care. I think their luxury tax was more than most team salaries.

They needed to do this. The Phillies did not have the money for both Lee and Halladay, otherwise they would have done their best to get both. If they keep Lee they risk losing him after this year, but with Halladay they are assured that they have a long time number one starter. This is all aside from the fact that Halladay is still the better pitcher of the two, regardless of the good games that Lee pitched in Philadelphia.

The underlying player the Phillies lost was Travis d'Arnaud, a guy I liked since they drafted him a few years ago, and someone who could have replaced Ruiz. All in all it was a solid trade that was made to ensure that they would have a number one pitcher, and not a bunch of mediocre guys. Now if Hamels could somehow return to form they would be set, but the reality is that Hamels status is really up in the air now.

That luxury tax keeps some of these small-market teams in business. Yes, there is inequity in MLB, but the luxury tax has helped normalize things a bit.

Just got back from Cavs/Sixers game (Sixers should have won), and thought I would add to this thread that Halladay was sitting above me. I am pretty sure it was his first visit to Philadelphia, they announced his name and all, then I saw everyone look up and he was in a Club Box right on top of me. Nothing else to add to this thread other than that everyone gave him a standing ovation. Pretty cool nonetheless.

The day the Blue Jays "abused" their only ever MVP (George Bell) by letting him go after being the best Blue Jay of all time is the day the Blue Jays started sucking and will always suck.

They will be lucky to win 1 more World Series in the next 80 years.

The Yankees will win at least 50 in that time.

    Blue Jays suck period.

Good riddance doc. You are overrated.

Jays over under for wins this year should be about 25.

    Are you serious?

Jays won two championships after Bell.

Doc overated? He's the best pitcher of this decade, nobody was as consistant and as much of a workhorse. On top of that he was a true professional athelete, an employee to the team. No ego no nonsense. I hope he wins the cy and the series he deserves.

A agree about the jays sucking next year, but also feel they got what they could for him. Now hopefully Vernon gets off to a good start so we can possibly get rid of him.
