I've tried this before on forums and I find it really can hurt the forum content wise. A decent medium is a shout/chatbox.

Agreed. It can be difficult to moderate chat rooms and none of the content there is going to transfer to the boards and get picked up for SEO purposes.
It could also detract from useful conversations that might otherwise take place in threads with input from people in significantly different time zones.

Yeah I don't think I would use it much.. I also think it might take away form soem good threads with good info..
i don't think it would be too good either. much better having good discussions in the forum, also would be too hard to monitor spammers etc

I think keep things forum based. Knowledge transfer is why most people are here and you definitely lose that with chat function.
