It might help to have a step-by-step guide to show members how to complete their profiles and interact with other members.

This way you don't get stuck with a bunch of boring profiles that have no avatars. I know not everyone is a fan of avatars, but I think they lend each member a level of personality that helps increase interactions.

Everyone just having their name in text with no picture is kinda meh imho.

Plus having members complete other aspects of their profiles (including messenger contacts) makes it easier for people to network and communicate as well.
