I would suggest that trying to rank for a keyword phrase of a single word is a waste of time, yes. You should be trying to get your pages to rank for multiple keyword phrases instead. The ROI is far better.

Thanks Randy, I normally go after 2 or 3 words but I was looking in adwords keyword tool and seen rakeback gets 40k searches a month. I just had to ask about this keyword before moving forward.

Yeah, 100% agree with Randy. I think Leporello has had premium rankings for that term for a long time, and will be the first to tell you it's overated. Plus, how are you going to make it into the top 5, when the competition is mainly massive affiliates with premium aged domains. Try to focus on the plethora of LT instead.

To be fair, that particular page on that particular site isn't about poker, but the principle translates into any web industry.
