Default Benefit and Prevention of Referrer Spam

I know this has been covered before, but I think it was discussed with reluctance, noone wants to explain blackhat seo because they're afraid to spread it.

I have more than 100,000 clicks recorded already this month as a result of referrer spam. I really don't understand the benefit. There's the slim possibility that I will visit, I get that.

I also heard about the possibility that my awstats log is crawled, and a spider then follows to their page, but I'm not following that theory.

Also, can a refererr be banned? Some sites with some significant SEO troubles have reported being huge victims of referrer spam, and being unsure of the relation.. I'd just rather not.
    I write about:
    • Poker
    • Sportsbetting
    • Bingo
    • Casinos
    • Forex
    • Online Dating
    • Real Estate

I don't think a referrer can be banned because if it would you could use it to ban your competitors.

Spammers want to get on your logs which include referrer statistics. Some sites publish these logs so they get a free link when the logs are indexed. You can block them through .htaccess and mod_rewrite where you can block the IP (or an entire subnet) or the domain.
