I don't think Randys experiment is great tbh. The whole point of linking out is that it is something that websites should be doing naturally as it's a reflection of how the web without commercial interests would work - people linking to great resources, awesome sites and pages etc.
This won't give you a boost by doing it overnight, linking out to google. What it will provide is a signal as to how your site behaves. Do you regularly link out to great resources, great articles, funny videos, etc etc etc. Adding a link to google wont boost your rankings overnight, but regularly linking out to great resources is believed by many to be a signal that Google uses to determine how trustworthy your site is.

I only ask cause i have spent a few hours looking at many sites and of the ones that do link out to say Gamble Aware, 50% of them do it as a no follow and 50% do it as a follow. Just wondering what peoples thoughts were. Im a noob so i need to ask these ABC questions.
My guess is that those that put a nofollow tag want to link to this site because they really recommend it to their visitors but don't want to pass any link juice. These should be sites that mark all outgoing links as nofollow.

You have to do follow. Based on seomoz no follow links only represent 2-3% of all links by the way. If you find 50%, this is maybe as we are in the gambling space and people are reluctant to give juice away. But imo using no follow defeats the purpose of such outbound links.

This is one of the things that I haven't really tested enough although I definitely should. I'm interested in reading what other people's results are with these. By the way, I agree with Randy, there's only one way to decide this stuff and that's to try it out. Anything else is just wild guessing![]()
