I believe what's happened is they've dramatically increased the amount of queries the freshness factor impacts.

Like Caffeine, big deal about something that does nothing. I have sites that haven't even been indexed despite having pages up for weeks along with sitemaps, and a link or two. If they can't even index a new site or index new pages on already indexed sites, it's still pretty dumb.

I like this move by Google, and it makes complete sense. The Internet should be about fresh and relevant content. I think this will be a big ranking factor in the near future, especially for websites that never update.

For something that was supposed to effect 35% of searches I haven't noticed any major shifts yet.

I like this too, if it works, more often than not I use the 'results within the past year / month' for personal searches.
