Default New Content Vs Building Links

I think if anyone had to choose, they would go with building unique content over building links on a 1 to 1 basis (1 new page > 1 new link). But, what do you guys think is the equivalent ratio of new content : new links when it comes to PR?

1 page = 5 new links? Obviously the quality of links matter, so lets just go with pages that are PR1 that do not have an abnormal amount of outgoing or spammy links.

I've never been the one to go out and hunt and get people to link to us and have tried to keep it mainly content focused. Maybe after X number of pages each new unique content page becomes less and less important.

This is not a relevant ratio for PR (or, if it is relevant, it's not solvable - no one has an answer to your question that would be based on anything but a guess).

What you want to focus on, I think, is finding creative ways to let more people know about your content. This can involve a number of things:

    - Twitter / Facebook / etc
    - Going through analytics and looking at what search traffic you're getting and tweaking your content / creating new content as a result of that research
    - Having a presence on forums like these
    - Doing guest content on other sites with high traffic or rep
    - Focusing on creative ways to arrange / display / present your content as opposed to just a list of articles

Also, focus more on unique content if possible, and less on the standard bankroll articles / short generic "strategy" articles like "the best poker game" ... you're just one of hundreds competing for that traffic.

Depends completely on the content you're producing and the ability it has of generating natural links on it's own. If it's sub-par content you'd be wrong. For the most part, promoting your good content is far superior to adding more pages to your site.

The question should rather be "should I spend one hour on creating content or one hour on dropping links?" or "should I spend 25$ on content or 25$ on links?"

I think the more correct question is where can I get the most bang for my buck.

If you're just creating/buying cheap content it's not likely to attract many links.

If you're just buying cheap links, they're not likely to pass value or to pass value for very long.

But "likely" is just a blind guess at what may or may not happen based on very broad, general experience.

A lot of people buy links, having no way of knowing which (if any) of those links pass value. The shotgun strategy works well enough if you can spread enough links across enough different sites that your diversity keeps you ahead of the filters. But the link spam communities are loaded with anecdotes about people who poisoned their sites with 10,000-link shots (notably, none of the tool vendors ever admit to seeing any bad effects from blasting cheap links across blogs and forums).

The best content is the content that people enjoy reading, that they come back to, and that they share.

The best links are the links that drive value in as many different ways as possible over the greatest length of time.

You should always aim for those lofty goals but understand you won't always reach them. Don't obsess over how perfect you can get it today as long as you keep working on improving your game day-by-day.

Also worth bearing in mind - content will be permanent whereas a link may well be just for a year/whatever period you buy it for.
