The darkest hour is just before dawn
If you have a site that does something (note: I"m not currently in this crowd) natural links are easy to get - raketherake, pokertube, pokertableratings, pokerscout, all great examples.

Alright GL with that...I want to go really mainstream and do something like... a "man blog" with post about beer and gadgets and toys, then slip in some high quality poker content. That kind of thing.![]()

Something else I've noticed is that people seem to think that getting "natural links" just happens. That's now how it works. You can ask for links and people will give them to you. I do it all the time. Friends of mine do too. Those are perfectly natural. If you want natural links, you have to promote your content. There are dozens of ways to do this besides just buying links.
Content that's built to attract links isn't the same as content that's built to make money. No, your "Party Poker Room Review" article probably won't get a lot of links. But your article about the "How to Teach Kids Math Using Card Games" will likely attract some natural links, especially if you let some people in the education field know about the article. The authority you get from the links to that page will lift your entire site's rankings, too.
