Please show me some large scale proof, not one small unimportant example. I am skeptical. It seems like everyone has bought their rankings in one way or another.

Sites like WSOP.com have a lot of natural links. A lot of the big poker affiliate sites and sites like 2p2 also have a lot of links, although a good number of the large affiliate obviously buy links as well.
Most people build shitty sites that serve no purpose other than making themselves money. Not only is there no reason for anyone to link to their pages, there is no reason for a visitor to even bother reading their articles either. 99% of all affiliate marketing is based off spam and this why it makes absolutely perfect sense for Google to reducing rankings for affiliate sites. Of course most don't even realize they are spamming and polluting the web - but come on how many more articles does the web need on (insert topic) that add not and ounce of fresh perspective.
I get linked to routinely by forums such a 2+2, SBR, casinomeister, covers, pocket fives etc, and have also gotten links in past from major news sites like nbc.com, and get links news feed type sites (major industry portals PR5+ that share news content as side thing). It works just most people are lazy and lack any sort of creativity to develop a quality product. Your test writing content should be whether the page can get linked on each major forum and not be deleted. If you can pass that test, your on right track, when others start sharing, discussing and even arguing and debating over your content, yeah no sweat you'll have no shortage of natural links.

Who are the linkerati in poker/gambling then? A handful of poker blogs?
And compare it to the size of the private link buying establishment, natural links are inconsequential. Especially if you want to rank for a buying keyword, like "site name bonus code", the person who spends the most money wins, right? Or the person who is the most resourceful with their money wins.
Take content out of the discussion. You can create the very best gambling, casino, poker content on the internet. And it wont get links on its own.

Sure, considering that most people who write room reviews (or make the writers follow a structure) sound like they've never played at the room they're writing about. Most room reviews aren't biased in the slightest either, and they should be, otherwise all rooms are technically the same. How does that help anyone?
It doesn't. That's why people have to buy their way to the top.
As pokerprop said, the web is already full of old and regurgitated content.
Speaking of which, let's use yours (from your other thread) as an example:
Blackjack Strategy Guide
Why should someone link to this? Why do you feel like you should rank high in the serps for this page (or any page on your site)? It's not different from any other basic blackjack page on the internet.
This certainly isn't an attempt to attack you, or insult anyone else for what they publish online (and I apologize if it sounds that way), but just try putting this into perspective. If you're not going to try to distinguish yourself from all the other sites out there, you're going to have an uphill battle, especially in a niche as competitive as poker/casino/sports betting.
Edit: By the way, your old site (I forget the name) was an example of a link worthy site. You could've made (more) money from it. I'm sure others would agree with me too.
