How would you compare to an exact match for an *.org say ?

You would still derive the benefit of having the keyword as part of the domain, but you would not far as well against a pre-existing domain, because your domain name would be newer. Google have stated that they don't weight TLD in their results, and I don't believe other search engines do either.
If you're targeting geographically, there might be a small benefit to having a .us targeted to Americans, but I would venture that would be a very small benefit.
.org is much better than .us
.com .net and .org are neutral in terms of geographic location, .us would do better in the US where the .org may do better globally for the given phrase
