Here are a few tips for optimizing blogs:

• Write long articles and break them up with H2, H3, H4 headers.
• Start paragraphs with bolded and italicized words or expressions.
• For each article, pick 2-4 expressions that you will use several times each. Use keyword research tools to pick the expressions.
• Write a series of 3-5 articles for each topic and include an article link index at the bottom of each article
• Publish one article per day at least five days a week
• Make sure your blog is pinging all the available ping servers (Wordpress keeps an up-to-date list)
• Revisit old topics and link back to the older posts from within the new articles
• Once each month write a recap article that links to all the previous articles on your blog for the month

Don't get hung up on using SEO plug-ins and tools. Just write good, sensible, interesting content and use traditional content structure and emphasis to help the search engines figure out what is useful and important.
