I see a lot of blogs are now using rel="bookmark"

What value does this rel="bookmark" provide? and how is rel="bookmark" properly used?

I'm totally clueless and a bunch of Googling didn't help.

Bookmark - Refers to a bookmark. A bookmark is a link to a key entry point within an extended document. The title attribute may be used, for example, to label the bookmark. Note that several bookmarks may be defined in each document.

The HTML4 spec describes a bookmark as "a link to a key entry point within an extended document". By convention (citation needed), this entry point also captures the notion of a "permalink".

In the eyes of Google it probably doesn't give anything extra. As a user don't see it I don't think Google use it either.
