Index or Home Page

Ok so currently my content and everything is in my index.php file. I'm thinking that I need to make a home page so in the "reading settings" of WP I can add it as the static front page rather than having it set as a post.

Can anyone confirm this would be best or to leave as is?

Yes. If you use Wordpress I'd recommend doing that. Just create a new Page, put your homepage content on it, change that setting to be static to that page. Not sure it really matters which way you do it but that is how Wordpress was intended to be used.
