i searched for a domain today and the exact one i wanted was taken for .com, .net and .org,
however im looking to target the U.S so would .us be okay to use?
would this rank normally like other extensions?

Not 100% sure if this is a good test but seems reasonable.....
I did a search on .us in quotes on Google.com
Can see the site nic.us in the top handful
Visit nic.us and take the obvious keyword from it ie US domain name registrations
Search on this keyword and nic.us comes up number 1
Suggests that a .us with all the usual backlinking, content etc wouldn't be prevented from getting high listing

.us top-level domain names work just fine in the major search engines.
