Nofollow isn't useless. It never did what a lot of people thought it did, but nofollow remains exactly what it started as: preventing PR from going to the destination site, and making it so you have no risk in linking to a questionable destination site (in this case, an online gambling site).

The only reason to *not* use nofollow on affiliate links is because you think Google si lying when they say no site will get a negative mark against if for using nofollow. If you think Google is not lying about stuff, not using nofollow on affiliate links is foolish (in a small way).

all of our poker based sites are classed as gambling sites. Why do you think that we'll be penalised for linking to other gambling sites?

Because some are spammy. Some will be judged spammy at a future date. Party, Pacific and Titan all have had major penalties in the past. It's a nobrainer to nofollow links to such sites.

Nofollowing sites one suspects will be judged in such a manner is proper use of the tag, from what I have observed.

"NoFollow" was originally proposed for links that the site operator did not place and could not vouch for.

If you are knowingly, intentionally putting links on your site, you should not be nofollowing them.

If you're afraid you'll trigger a filter or penalty in a search engine's algorithm by linking to a site, don't link to it.

If you want to create a resource where other people place links, then either use nofollow or 302-redirects on the outbound links.

I really don't see any value in using nofollow on affiliate links.
