Very strange problem - Site not being indexed

I launched a new site about 6 weeks ago.

When I do a search site:mysite.com it shows me 15 indexed pages. However, when i login to Google Webmaster Tools, it shows URLs submitted in sitemap 15 - URLs Indexed 0.

I've also done some standard link building and my site appears outside the top 500 results for the main anchor text i've used. I've no links to or from bad neighbourhoods and it's a longtail anchor so one I should easily dominate.

Any ideas what the problem might be?

webmaster tools is not even close to being up to date. Actually the sitemap function seems to have stopped updating on a couple of sites for almost three weeks now. Pages are still getting indexed but its no longer showing when it was last crawled so I wouldnt get your hopes to high that the tools you get are accurate and up to date.

Second, your site is only six weeks old, its not uncommon for it to index than drop into an oblivion. Give it some more time and even than it could be the longtail you think you should dominate is qute possibly dominated by others making it a bit more difficult than you thought. Six weeks is still kinda early though.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I've done a lot of research into the keyword phrases I'm targeting with the site going as far as in depth backlink analysis for many of the top 10 competitors. I've experience the Google dance on several occasions, but this site never went high in the first place. My usual experience of the Google dance is for it to go into the top 50, drop to 400 and a few weeks later come back and stabilise.

With GWT, it's showing the sitemap was downloaded again just yesterday, but still isnt showing any of the URLs as being indexed. Anyway, ill give it some more time and will report back.

Is this site a WP site, and if so, are you using any of the SEO Plug-ins? If not, did you mark the box stating "Allow search engines to find this blog" or something similar?
