The "depends" answer is a good one. Cutts has spoke a lot on this, even recently. There is no such that as "always" when it comes to rankings and SEO IMO.

One thing I am confident of is that the question above about "replacing" a page in the SERPS is not a guarantee. It may help it rank, but if you rank #5 for a term, redirect it to a new page, it will not rank #5 right away usually.

There are soooo many other factors involved in all of this, just concrete answers in all of this.
